What Are Alpacas?

Alpacas are an animal breed that originated in South America.  They are related to camels but different in both appearance and use.  Alpacas are mainly valued for their fiber.  Their fiber is typically used to create knitted, crocheted and woven apparel and household items.  The vast majority of alpacas in the world today are domesticated.  While they have only been domesticated in the United States since the 1980s, they are a popular choice for farmers and breeders.

Alpacas are generally gentle and intelligent animals who like to live in a herd.  They are well suited for life on a farm and easy to handle in comparison to some other types of farm animals.  Some alpacas will only spit when they or their offspring are threatened and, while unpleasant, these actions are rarely of serious threat to their human caretakers.

In addition to their personalities, alpacas are nice looking animals.  Their coats are magnificent and their faces are adorable.  Many farmers enjoy watching their herds graze and roam around the farmlands.

Why Should I Buy Alpaca?

The two main reasons for buying alpacas is that it can be fun and it can be profitable.  Many alpaca owners have a real love for their animals whether they own their own farm or pay others to board them.  Other alpaca owners find that alpaca farming is easier than alternative forms of farming but provides the same great life style benefits of fresh farm air, a family centered life and a slower paced existence than a regular 9-5 kind of job.

The other reason to buy alpacas is to make money.  Alpaca fiber is in high demand for making things such as scarves, sweaters, hats, socks, mittens and blankets.  Some alpaca owners sell the fiber as it is off of the animal to others who spin and dye it to be useable yarn for weaving, crocheting or knitting projects.  Other alpaca owners do everything themselves and have the facilities to spin, dye and sell alpaca fleece or plied yarn to individuals, wholesalers and retailers.

There are many good reasons to buy alpacas.  However, they are large animals with specific needs.  It is not as simple as buying an angora rabbit, for example, and selling its fur.  For that reason, it is important that every potential alpaca owner understand what is involved in caring for, maintaining, marketing and selling alpacas before they enter the business.  Many people who take the time to research the benefits and responsibilities of owning alpacas will ultimately buy alpacas and enjoy the benefits that their herd will bring to them and to their family.
