What to Expect if You Live and Work on an Alpaca Ranch

What happens on a typical day on an alpaca ranch?  While many alpaca ranchers would probably tell you there is no such thing as a typical day because each day is exciting and new, there are some common activities that happen regularly and potential ranchers should be aware of those activities and willing to engage in them prior to making a career out of alpaca ranching.  The information found below will explain some of the common routine duties of alpaca ranchers.

The Daily Chores on an Alpaca Ranch

Like many kinds of livestock, alpacas require regular care that includes cleaning their living spaces, feeding them and attending to their medical and grooming needs.  Luckily, alpacas are clean animals.  In fact, cleaning their stalls is not as daunting (or disgusting) as it is for other types of animals.  Alpacas tend to create common waste piles that can easily be scooped above and removed.  Typically, this is done once or twice a day.

All of the animals must also be fed.  That means that their water and hay supplies must be maintained and refilled each day.  Extra attention should be paid to animals that have special conditions.  For example, pregnant and nursing mothers, herdsires and underweight or ill animals may need to be provided with extra nourishment.  Vitamins and minerals may need to be provided to some or all of the animals daily.

Other Regular Chores

Other important chores must be carried out on alpaca ranches, albeit not every day.  For example, toe nails need to be trimmed and teeth need to be cared for.  All of the animals must be up to date on their vaccinations and receive appropriate veterinary care.  Alpacas are usually bred and their breeding needs to be supervised and the resulting births attended and babies cared for.  While these are not everyday occurrences, they are important work of alpaca ranchers.

The Rest of the Day

Of course, the daily life of an alpaca farmer is not limited to the chores needed to maintain the upkeep of the animals.  There are also business details to address.  Alpaca ranches need to be appropriately marketed so that the business is profitable.  Business records must be kept and paperwork must be completed.  There are many tax deductions available for alpaca farmers that can be obtained when proper paperwork is maintained.

While this might seem like a lot of work, many people are attracted to the business of alpaca ranching because of the lifestyle.  A typical day offers much flexibility so that other personal or family priorities may be achieved.  There is also time to enjoy the beauty of the ranch and the gentle grace of the animals that make an alpaca ranch so special.
